Green sauna - the Art of healing with vihta

A well-heated sauna offers many wellbeing benefits. When you bring one or two vihtas - bundles of fresh tree branches - the experience deepens and its preventative, restorative effects multiply. Vihta has been a central part of Finnish sauna culture for centuries, considered essential for every sauna visit until recent decades. With the gentle rhythm of the branches and the presence of löyly, the body naturally supports its own ability to restore balance.

At its best, sauna treatment with vihta can feel as relaxing as a massage - yet it also nurtures the senses and the spirit in a way no other practice can. In old Finnic traditions, healing with vihta was likely part of the ritual or magic sauna tradition connected to emotional and mental wellbeing.

Good löyly is essential for pleasant vihta treatment. Without it, the treatment may feel uncomfortable. This is why Rajaportti Sauna is the ideal place to experience these “green palms of the forest". Your guide is Siiri Koski, a certified traditional sauna healer, deeply familiar with the healing sauna tradition and the many forms and uses of vihta.

Rajaportti’s Green Sauna is an approximately 2,5 hour immersion into the craft of Finnish vihta healing - a deep dive into the living tradition of Finnish sauna healing. During the session you will discover different kinds of vihtas (birch is the most famous, but they can also be made from many other trees, herbs, flowers and soft branches) and explore their diverse applications in preventative wellbeing.

Traditional sauna healing session is priced at 370 € + VAT, in addition to the sauna rental fee. The sauna rental fee is 440 € on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 520 € on Sundays and public holidays.

Group size: Ideal for 10 - 12 people. Larger groups are possible for an additional fee.

Vihta feels best directly on the skin, but guests are welcome to wear swimwear if they prefer.
